Matthew Behrend

University of Southern California

Area of Study: Electrical Engineering; Neural prosthetics

Fellowship Years: 2004 - present

Profile:

Matthew is a Ph.D. student in the James D Weiland group, part of the NSF engineering research center for Biomimetic Microelectronic Systems at USC. The purpose is to measure spatial resolution of artificial vision, and to effectively engineer the next generation of implants for people blinded by retinal degenerative diseases. His research is producing the first high-resolution images of the picture the retina "sees" from electrical stimulation by a multi-electrode array.

Matthew enjoys applying a sharp engineering mind to create & apply new methods for biological imaging, while embracing the uniqueness of the problems as biological in nature. His study under expert mentors Cheryl M Craft and Robert H Chow provides the broad spectrum of problem-solving that the fellowship fosters.

He can often be found dancing tango at Caltech, ordering his food in Chinese, or meditating in noble silence. Matthew's professional interest lies in genetic therapies for blindness and bringing them to the clinic.
