Hertz Foundation Awards 2009-2010 Fellowships

Ten Young Leaders in Applied Science and Engineering Receive Nation’s Most Generous Ph.D. Fellowships


LIVERMORE, CA, APRIL 1, 2009 –- The Fannie and John Hertz Foundation, one of the nation’s leading non-profit organizations, focused on supporting innovative young leaders in the applied sciences and engineering fields, has awarded Hertz Fellowships to 10 students for support lasting up to five years of their graduate studies in the fields of applied sciences and engineering. Since 1963, the Hertz Foundation has provided the nation’s most generous applied science and engineering Ph.D. Fellowships to over 1,050 uniquely gifted applied scientists and engineers with the potential to change the world for the better.

"The Hertz Foundation recognizes that solutions to the critical challenges we face in our country and around the world require the rare talents of innovative leaders in the applied sciences and engineering,” stated the Hertz Foundation President John Holzrichter, Ph.D., Hertz Fellow 1969.  “The 10 new Hertz Fellows will soon be joining the ranks of leaders in science, technology, business, academia, military and public service who are solving seemingly intractable problems by taking risks and thinking creatively.”

Selected from an elite pool of 543 applicants, the 2009-2010 Hertz Fellows are comprised of 8 men and 2 women.  Last year thirteen men and three women were offered Hertz Fellowships.  Physics, mathematics and biology were the most popular current fields of study among the 2009-2010 new Fellows.  A complete listing of the 2009-2010 new Fellows follows.

Valued at over a $250,000, Hertz Fellowships are unique no-strings-attached fellowships which allow exceptional applied scientists and engineers the freedom to innovate.  Hertz Fellows pursue their own ideas with financial independence under the guidance of the finest professors at the country’s top universities.  Hertz Fellows are chosen for their intellect, their ingenuity, and their potential to bring meaningful and lasting change to our society.  The highly competitive selection process includes a comprehensive application, support form their mentor, and two rounds of exacting interviews by recognized leaders in applied science and engineering.
